im dying too, emma

alsooo, i just realized the light dissipates from lola's eyes on the third to last panel. it's probably not anything special but it might still be worth noting.
Guest 12th Aug 2017, 11:17 AM
someone speculated that the light in lola's eyes, among other things, showed resolve/willingness to live in them. in the panel the light goes out, they're rejecting help , but in the next two panels they reconsider their decision, probably because they're remembering that they're actually Trying to live, and that requires water.
big mean furry 14th Aug 2017, 10:15 PM
i think lolas eye shines leaving in the third to last panel is more about the fact that she was disconnecting her real desires/feelings from what she was providing others. her eye shines return when she admits she is thirsty. i think theyre associated with honesty and lolas connection between her feelings and real life. badly worded but
Guest 10th Aug 2017, 12:03 PM
i'm losing my mind for two reasons:
1. what happens to sugar???????? i'm both so worried and curious
2. lola flashing passerbys in an attempt to attract more attention Is So. im love them so much?
Guest 10th Aug 2017, 12:06 PM
Sugar's fate is probably up to speculation unless if the comic starts alternating between what our two drop outs are going to do. I have a feeling we simply won't see sugar again though.
Fen 10th Aug 2017, 12:04 PM
just a few things
-lola lying abt her name and hesitating (i think?)
-seatbelt on. considering the car crash metaphors and literal events, ?
-lola calling herself stupid ;u;
-lola almost denying the water even after walking so far, but then accepting it, accepting help/resources
Guest 10th Aug 2017, 12:07 PM
god damn I love the colors on this page.
noble 10th Aug 2017, 12:09 PM
desiree davidson... all names should be alliterative tbh
also, im gay
noble 10th Aug 2017, 12:15 PM
"dont tell dev"
is she is talking to dawn, i wonder?
kitsune-rokko 10th Aug 2017, 12:09 PM
Your detailing is so atmospheric like, the road detail in Panels 2 & 3, the glare on Lola's phone screen, and stuff. With the subtle lighting change of the inside of Desiree's truck it really captures the heat & sunlight of the scenario.

Also that first panel's composition with the empty space to the right of it to show like, the isolation is really :eyes:
Guest 10th Aug 2017, 12:13 PM
"Em" she picked the next letter down from "L" huh. Dang that's pretty far down the alphabet...
Guest 10th Aug 2017, 12:16 PM
lola mentioned earlier that theyve lied about their name before, "just on a whim", and the implication is that's how they started going by lola. i wonder if they're gonna start going by em/emma in general rather than lola now?
Guest 10th Aug 2017, 12:14 PM
Is Lola texting Dawn the species and name of everyone she gets a ride from? I don't know of anyone else that knows Devon and Lola.
Guest 10th Aug 2017, 12:38 PM
i hope sugar's ok ;~; i want them to reunite so bad.... the salmon lady is so cute also
Guest 10th Aug 2017, 12:40 PM
Judging by the fact that Lola's been hitchhiking a while now with the multiple names she's texted, she must be far away from Sugar now. I would assume if Sugar were alive, she'd be texting Lola. I have a feeling we're not going to see what Sugar's fate was and that it'll be left ambiguous.
Guest 10th Aug 2017, 12:49 PM
flagstaff, arizona is only about a 1.5 hr drive from the grand canyon, so it's not a super far drive, and sugar has the car. i know that her fate is probably gonna be left ambiguous because that's a big theme in drop-out, but i can't get the visual out of my head of sugar racing with the truck and yelling to lola out of a rolled-down window, much to the confusion of desiree.
it's interesting that we aren't shown the time on lola's phone, but if we can assume that lola texted whoever they did while walking away from sugar on the last page, they've only taken 3 cars between sunrise and noon(?). not sure where i'm going with this, but it's an interesting detail.
Guest 11th Aug 2017, 4:50 PM
i can only naively assume sugar hasnt texted lola because she's worried lola hates her or is driving around looking for her.............. i hope shes ok i love her
Ry 10th Aug 2017, 1:01 PM
i'm so happy this updated!! but sugar... my girl... i hope she's alright (whatever standards of 'alright' you take that as)
Guest 10th Aug 2017, 5:38 PM
Sorry for the dumb question but why does Lola type out the name and species of every person she meets like? What's the point of that?
Nobody 10th Aug 2017, 5:41 PM
hitchhiking is dangerous. if you "disappear" but you texted someone the name/appearance, they at least have a lead on what happened to you.
JuJ 10th Aug 2017, 5:45 PM
i don't know if this is something obvious but why is Lo flashing the drivers? is that a normal thing in hitchhiking?
Nobody 10th Aug 2017, 5:57 PM
wouldn't say "normal", but people definitely do it. it works. it also helps cool off your body.
guest 10th Aug 2017, 5:59 PM
i have A Lot to say it's all emotional and not very coherent so i'm just settling on saying i'm really, incredibly massively gay for the desiree the fish trucker
earthcell 10th Aug 2017, 7:28 PM
wasn't sure what species desiree was at first, heard someone say salmon and that sounds right so

really interesting that even fish have their own humanoid version.

also needless to say i didn't expect the view to suddenly change from sugar to lola. kind of scared about what's gonna happen but also excited
finch 11th Aug 2017, 3:59 PM
i mean lola is a snail fur, if she exists i don't think humanoid fish are so shocking
anonymous 11th Aug 2017, 5:00 AM
hmmm lola changed her shirt and removed their hat... probably just because they were sweat-soaked but it's a nice touch. initially i thought they could have been wearing sugar's shirt (the one she had a nosebleed in, or maybe the one sugar changed into later) but i'm really not sure...

i hope sugar's alright, i'll miss her if we don't end up seeing her again in this comic continuity... part of me is hoping the comic will end up timeskipping a few months or a year or so and they run into each other at a starbucks or something, but that's probably just the coffee-shop AU lover in me!
Guest 11th Aug 2017, 1:19 PM
this is just me spitballing but w/r/t Lola "passing"/being perceived as a dude a lot of the time, losing the hat and lifting the shirt might be them attempting to femme it up some, so as to look more vulnerable/less threatening as a "girl" hitchhiking than a guy
chalpal 12th Aug 2017, 6:35 AM
i really like how lola changes their mind and takes the help/water,,i think its p neat
Guest 12th Aug 2017, 11:24 AM
what of it? what of... em
Guest 12th Aug 2017, 11:56 AM
i kept thinkin how odd it was that you chose not to draw nipples on lola but i realized that shes not a mammal. im guessing thats how things work in this universe correct me if im wrong
Nobody 13th Aug 2017, 9:04 AM
yeah, sometimes non-mammals don't have nipples, sometimes they do; there's a lot of genetic diversity. sometimes humans are born without them, too! it's called athelia.
Wrow 14th Aug 2017, 6:42 PM
Since drop out is coming to an end I want to say that I'm very very excited for Borderline! Your comics are good, call me easily wowed but everything you make impresses me
Youve made an admirable comic, gray!
I hope you have Good day/night (i originally wrote it night/day but I realized that rhymed lol)
monkeyking 16th Aug 2017, 8:11 AM
i notice their top eyes keep almost direct eye contact w/ the stranger in an almost 'im watching you' / distrusting gesture while their bottom eyes mostly look away until the last few panels like. Anxious/general eye contact avoidance ?
